How to Design Your Own Tattoo

When you decide that you want to get a tattoo, the next exciting thing to do is to choose a design that will be permanently marked on your skin. Some people are content with getting tattoo designs that are current tattoo trends. However, some people want to be unique and stand out from the tattooed crowd with their exquisitely-designed tattoos.

People who can afford it hire a professional tattoo artist/designer to make a design that they can call their own. However, this option is expensive and does not guarantee that you will get a design that you will be happy with. If you are on a budget and you think you have enough creativity to design your own tattoo, then why not do the work yourself? Most people who made their own designs claim that it is more fun and satisfying if you design your own tattoo. Aside from garnering awe from your family, relatives, and friends, you also manage getting tattooed with a unique design that other people will never have (unless they copy it from you). If you want to give it a try, here’s a simple guide on how you can design your own tattoo:
To design your own tattoo, you will need:
• Tattoo Designs Catalog (especially if you are a beginner)
• Colored Pencils
• Paper
• Stencil Paper
• Eraser

1. Decide on Your Tattoo Theme
When you design your own tattoo, you have to choose a specific theme to help you conceptualize a personalized tattoo. Do you want a Celtic design? Animal tattoos with your own insignia? Your initials in a unique font style? Determine the tattoo theme that would work for you and confine your designing efforts along your chosen theme.

2. Browse through the Tattoo Designs Catalog

Whether or not you were able to decide on your tattoo theme, it always helps to browse through tattoo designs catalogs to help you design your own tattoo. Looking at tattoo catalogs doesn’t mean that you are already copying someone else’s design. You only need some help with regard to tattoo concepts, especially if you are a beginner. You can always choose a tattoo design from a catalog then modify it to make it personalized.

3. Make a Few Sketches on Paper

Always remember that when you are trying to design your own tattoo, it is best to create a few versions on a piece of paper. This will help you and your family or friends choose which one works best for you. You may be content with only one design, but what if other people who mean something to you do not like what you made? Create a few designs for you to choose from and experience the thrill of selecting the “lucky” design with the ones you love.

4. Make a Stencil Copy to Help your Tattoo Artist Apply the Design

After you design your own tattoo then decide to have it made by a tattoo artist, you need to transfer your design to stencil paper. Stencil copies of your own designs are easiest to copy because of the clarity of the design on stencil paper. If you are a seasoned designer who can easily design your own tattoo in minutes, you can work on stencil paper directly. However, if you are a newbie, you may just waste too much stencil paper with your efforts. Just remember that the final copy should be in stencil paper so your tattoo artist can copy it accordingly.
